As an elementary teacher, I have experienced the value of making learning relevant and meaningful for students in order to help them become successful learners. Rather than engaging in battles with students, finding a way to hook them in is essential. This is especially true for struggling learners. In his book “Toys are not the Enemy”, Michael Gibben describes how parents can help their child increase their interest and motivation to learn by including favourite toys into the academic area that they may be having difficulty with. As a result, these children are showing growth in their academic achievement. I recommend this book for both educators and parents as a tool to help engage and foster greater success for your student or child.

“Toys are not the Enemy” is a great tool for parents who want to make learning a fun experience. It is clear and provides great tools which any parent can easily use with their child. I highly recommend it not only to those parents who are in a struggle with their child during the learning experience but those who want to show their child that life long learning can always be fun.

This has given me the confidence to tackle homework come September. Before meeting Michael and reading his book, I was dreading homework time when my oldest started JK in September. Now, I am looking forward to being imaginative and playful. I feel like homework won’t be a chore that no one wants to do anymore.

This is a compelling book and Michael Gibben has done a thorough job in illustrating how “Toys are not the Enemy”.. As a former Substitute Teacher of long term assignments, specializing with Special needs children, and grades Pre K- 2nd grade, this is an excellent resource to apply in not just getting children to complete their homework, but, it builds trust, builds a great bond with parents, and makes learning fun and engaging. In my humble opinion, this is a “Must Read” book.

Teaching requires being creative and innovative. As teachers, we have to create an avenue through which students are inspired and motivated. I applaud my dear friend, Michael, for writing this heartwarming book which gives proof that toys such as Legos can be a valuable resource in aiding children in homework. His ideas and approach is and I like how he adds an assessment tool at the end of each case he shared.
